Biochemicals

Biochemicals include all of the molecules that provide the structure and function of life. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids are the primary categories. These molecules also include pharmaceuticals. Aspirin, morphine, codeine, and the drugs used in chemotherapy are examples of nature-derived biochemicals.

Stats - We produce over 2 billion tons of chemicals, yet only 2% of this is bio-based.

Boundary - Intricately tied to biodiversity and other ecosystem services, it is challenging to isolate the planetary boundary of biochemicals. Though their existence is not likely at risk of extinction, certainly their availability through sustainable process is diminishing.
